2021 in film

Image
Hello and welcome to the my 3rd annual end-of-year celebration for movies. This has quite unpredictable and incredible 2021, from big movies finally coming out after rigorous delays and the return of cinemas across the world. During the past 365 days, I have managed to see 260+ films, with just over half being from this very year, which I'll be focusing on today. I have include honourable mention categories for both performance and film and also split them into 'Streaming' and 'In Cinema' as there were too many movies to pick this year. As always, this is just my opinion. If you like a film I put in the 'worst ' section or disliked a film I put as 'Best', all the power to you. Art is subjective. With that being said here is my 2021 in film, categorised: 'Panda Bear It' by Evan Kidd 'Candyman' by John Gulerserian 'Supernova' by Dick Pope 'KATE' by Lyle Vincent 'The Killing Of Two Lovers' by Oscar Ignacio 'C

December 2021

All movies I saw in the cinema for first time during the month of December 2021 ranked from worst to best. (SPOILER WARNING FOR ALL FILMS PICTURED!) #6: House of Gucci Much like 'People Just Do Nothing: Big In Japan' back in September, I waited several weeks into 'House of Gucci's theatrical run to watch it, compared to going opening week like with most films I see. Primary reason why, I just did not want to see it, did not interest me at all. Also, the recent negative comments the film's director, Ridley Scott, made toward "millennials and their phones" were stupid and contradicting as most of modern film advertising/promotion comes from phones and social media posts. The potentially only thing that made intrigued me to see 'House of Gucci' was Adam Driver, he was excellent in the beautifully mundane 'Paterson'. Where he played a small town bus driver, writing charming poems. * Wow, this was bad, immensly boring, I honestly tho

November 2021

All movies I saw in the cinema for first time during the month of November 2021 ranked from worst to best. (SPOILER WARNING FOR ALL FILMS PICTURED!) #6: MARVEL's The Eternals I'm not gonna lie, I was not that interested in seeing this. I liked Nomadland, Chloé Zhao done a terrific job with that film. I was intrigued to see Brian Tyree Henry's and Kumail Nanjiani, love 'Atlanta' (can't wait for season 3!) and really enjoyed 'The Big Sick'. * The first act and early half of the second were quite boring and cringe-worthy at times. But the 3rd act was absolutely excellent. Beautiful on-location shots, reminiscent of Chloé's 'Nomadland'. The CGI is alittle hit or miss. Sometimes it's a little janky and weird. The next, it's gorgeous and jaw-dropping. Brian Tyree's Phastos, Kumail's Kingo and also Chloe Ridloff's Makkari were my favourite parts of the film. I almost teared up at Phastos' passionate ra

October 2021

All movies I saw in the cinema for first time during the month of October 2021 ranked from best to worst. Yet another 6 films instead of 9. (SPOILER WARNING FOR A FILMS PICTURED ABOVED!)   #6: Addams Family 2 I didn't like the 2019 film. Found it to be very bland and had horrendous CGI, especially compared to what came out around that time too (Toy Story 4, Frozen II, Secret Life of Pets 2 and I'd even argue the sequel to Angry Birds) It shouldn't have gotten a theatrical release. I also thought it didn't warrant a sequel. The only thing I honestly liked from the original film from 2 years ago was when Lurch played the theme to 'Mr. Rogers' Neighbourhood'. * Man, this was quite boring. It seems to think "loud and obnoxious equals funny", which it literally doesn't in some instances. I only laughed at the "He gave me the finger." joke, everything else was unfunny. Absolutely cringed at the 'social distancing

September 2021

All movies I saw in the cinema for first time during the month of September 2021 ranked from best to worst. This has been another month where I've only got to 6 films a month compared to my regular 9. (SPOILER WARNING FOR A FILMS PICTURED ABOVED!)  #6. People Just Do Nothing: Big In Japan I never watched any episodes of the show, nor was I really interested in seeing this, hence why I've left it so late into it's theatrical run. I usually see films in the cinema within the first week of it's release. * This was little boring, I laughed at a small amount of jokes throughout the 100 minute runtime. I suppose, I would've enjoyed it more if I was a fan of the series. 3/10 #5. RESPECT I'm honestly surprised there hasn't been an Aretha Franklin bio-pic earlier than now. Jennifer Hudson was a great choice, she was amazing and one of the few redeeming qualities from 2019's 'Cats'. I don't know much about the late singe

August 2021

All movies I watched in the cinema for the month of August 2021 from worst to best. This was my shortest amount of movies for one month since I began reviewing films back in late 2018/early 2019. I've always try to aim for 9 films a month, but fell 3 short of the usual amount. (SPOILER WARNING FOR ALL FILMS PICTURED) #6: Reminiscence   The trailer had cool visuals of a futuristic city under water, but besides that not much else really interested me in seeing this. * Jackman's performance was great, especially in the 3rd act. The relentless pretentious narration and cheesy dialogue did get quite tiresome after a few minutes. Apart from the cools visuals and cinematography, the only good part of the film was Hugh wearing a white tank top. So I could "reminisce" of better times when he was Wolverine in FOX's X-Men films. Or just being in better films in general like 'Prisoners' as this was insanely boring. 3/10 #5: G.I Joe Origins: Snake E

July 2021

All films I saw in the cinema for the month of July 2021, ranked from worst to best. (SPOILER WARNING FOR ALL FILMS PICTURED) #9: OLD The only M.Night Shymalan films I've saw are from the 'Eastrail 177 trilogy', that ofcourse being 'Unbreakable', 'Split' and 'Glass'. Love all 3 of them films. I know he hasn't had clean sweep of great films, 'The Last Air Bender' and 'Lady In The Water' come to mind of ones that the large majority of viewers did not like. From the all trailers and advertisements, Old seemed really interesting. A story about a group of people who are on a mysterious and frightening island, trying to uncover secrets and meanings behind it before they quickly "grow old". * Man, I went into this thinking Old would have potential of being good. Poorly acted, directed, written, everything. The characters felt like they were written like dumbasses. When one failed to get through the cave
