April 2022
All movies I saw in the cinema for first time during the month of April 2022 ranked from worst to best.
(SPOILERS FOR ALL FILMS PICTURED ABOVE!)
#4: Sonic 2
I enjoyed the first film back in March 2020, it was fun and the redesigned Sonic definitely helped the enjoyment.
The trailer to the second film looked quite exciting as it seemed the people involved were finally moving more towards the video game side with the inclusion of Knuckles, Tails and Robotnik's classic egg shaped machines.
*
This was pretty decent. Alot better than the first film. I loved the Ugandan Knuckles reference in the opening.
Idris Elba as Knuckles was perhaps the best part of the entire film, he steals every scene he is in. I love his oblivious and completely serious line delivery.
The storyline with Sonic and co. is great and exciting but the human side still brings the film to a screeching halt. It literally goes from a high-octane chase through the Alps to a dull and uninteresting Hallmark-esque love story two or so scenes later.
The film ended in a good way and I'm quite intrigued what the 3rd and potentially final film has in store, hopefully it strays more away from the human side, with the introduction of Shadow.
6.2/10
#3: The Northman
I'm not one for films inspired by Norse tales/set during Medieval Times, which is why I only really wanted to see this because it starred Anya Taylor-Joy.
The only cool thing from the trailer (to me) was when Amleth caught the spear and threw it back.
*
This was pretty solid, though the first 50 or so minutes were quite painfully dull to get through.
My investment in the film I'd say began to skyrocket either the very first millisecond Anya appeared on-screen or when Amleth began picking off the main antagonist's farm people one by one, when the story began to make the most sense (to me, anyways).
The action sequences were perhaps my favourite part of the entire film (Along with Anya T.J, obviously). The gritty, hard-hitting and sometimes off-putting long takes makes me wish Robert Eggers would direct a theatrical version of 'The Last of Us'.
Stunning cinematography of the Iceland Volcanic hill and spectacular use of natural lighting.
6.8/10
#2: The Bad Guys
This was my first cinema trip of April 2022, which was on April Fool's Day.
The art style for this film looked incredible. Very unique, merging 2D and 3D animation, but not on the same level as the 'Arcane' series or 'Klaus' film.
The concept of the film was quite intriguing, about a group of animals pulling off heists.
*
Wow, this was absolutely incredible. The animation was stunning and reminded me alot of 'Into The Spider-Verse' and 'Mitchell's v Machines', with similar humour to boot. Never a dull moment!
Zasie Beetz, Craig Robinson, Sam Rockwell and Richard Ayoade were amazing.
It's a relatively formulaic and predictable story, but the comedy and art style keeps it fresh and immensely intriguing throughout it's 100+ minute runtime.
9/10
#1: The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
(My last cinema trip for April 2022.)
I've been looking forward to this film ever since the trailer dropped back in mid-December of last year. Mainly because it stars The Mandalorian himself, Pedro Pascal. Ever since the Disney+ show first aired in late 2019, I've become a quite an admirer of him.
I'm not a huge fan of Nicolas Cage, he was great in 'PIG'. But, I love the absolute meta-ness of this film that was showcased in the trailer. It's like a celebration of his biggest hits, 'The Rock', 'Con-Air' etc.
*
This was friggin' incredible. I was grinning ear-to-ear from when the lights went down all the way until the end credits rolled.
I hate that the 'Paddington 2' reference was officially released on social media platforms prior to the release (Thankfully, I done my best to avoid it). It's perhaps my favourite scene in this film. The way it suddenly cut to Nick tearing up was hilarious.
The pairing of Pedro Pascal and Nicolas Cage was really remarkable and very endearing. Loved the chemistry they have in each scene. They made a mundane tasks like swapping shoes so hilarious. Or crazy stuff like taking LSD.
I think this might be my favourite comedy film for this year or even just film in general, it was so good!
