July 2022
All movies I saw in the cinema for first time during the month of July 2022 ranked from worst to best.
#3. The Railway Children Return
This was my last cinema trip of July 2022.
Now, I would be lying if I said Sheridan Smith wasn't the only reason I wanted to see this. But, she is. I never saw the 1970 original and had little to no-interest in seeing the 2022 continuation/soft-reboot.
*
This was okay, great story though the pacing was very off. It might've worked better as a series than 90 minute film.
Quite simply, Sheridan Smith's role was the only thing about the movie that kept me invested throughout the runtime.
5.2/10

#2. Minions: The Rise of Gru
This was my first cinema trip of July 2022. This film, I think, has waited the longest to release after SEVERAL delays. Once in 2020 due to it being unfinished, then in 2021 perhaps due to Covid being prominent at the time, and finally releasing in 2022.
As a franchise, I can sorta understand the hype. The mascots for the films, The Minions, are quite funny spouting jibberish and surviving crazy stunts without a scratch. The films though, are okay. Nothing more, nothing less.
*
This was no different to the rest.
Visually, it was great, very colourful and spectacular textures. There was no genuinely surprising moments as most of the film was featured in the trailers and adverts. Nor was it actually funny, didn't laugh throughout the entire runtime.
It's crazy to me that Michelle Yeoh went from 'Everything, Everywhere, All At Once' straight to this, talk about versatility!
Hours after seeing this, I saw footage of other people's screenings and needless to say I was so glad the most that happened in mine was clapping during the credits.
4.3/10

#1. Thor: Love and Thunder
This was my first 3D screening since 'Jumanji: The Next Level' back in late 2019 and was my first 3D MCU film since 'Spider-Man: Far From Home' that same year. This has also been one of my most anticipated movies of this year. But, I would lying if I said a part of my hype wasn't slightly dimminished after seeing the trailer (not the teaser) in the cinema for the first time very recently.
The presence of "The Volume" in the trailer (used in D+'s the Mando, Boba and Kenobi series') felt more prominent and very painfully obvious compared to the Star Wars projects which felt alot more natural and subtle.
*
This honestly wasn't too bad. My only gripe I really have is the presence of "The Volume", as I said before. It hindered quite a few scenes especially and I was hoping watching it in 3D would've helped.
Taika's way of directing and film-making just isn't for everyone I guess. I loved his 'What We Do In The Shadows' and I think the comedy in 'Love and Thunder' was handled decently. The only part that I majorly laughed at was the reveal of the God Nini and what he said for the brief second he was on-screen. It was funny how it was pretty much just the Korg CGI model with a white bear.
The opening battle with Thor fighting "alongside" The Guardians of The Galaxy really great and perhaps point of the film, for me anyways.
Michael Giachino does not miss when it comes to making banger OSTs!
Chris Hemsworth, Taika Watiti and Tessa Thompson all done a brilliant job as Thor, Korg and Valkirye.
I do wish there were more scenes of Valkyrie ruling over New Asgard as King, but I think that's just my bias toward Tessa Thompson the actress herself talking. I really hope Marvel releases the "New Asgard Kings" basketball jerseys, I need to get one.
I was hoping with the "death" of Jane Foster during the climax of the film, that Natalie Portman would depart from the MCU, but according the post-credits, unfortunately not.
The film itself ended on a pretty good with Thor being a sort of father figure to Gorr's daughter and I can't wait to see what the future holds for the character.
7.4/10
