March 2023

All movies I saw in the cinema for first time during the month of March 2023 ranked from worst to best.

(SPOILER WARNING FOR ALL 4 FILMS PICTURED ABOVE)

#4: Scream VI

Never been a fan of the Scream franchise, I only just last year saw 3 & 5 during October (when Horror films should be released).

The only things that drew me to see this was Jenna Ortega, she was great in last year's 'X' and fifth 'Scream' film. Also it being set in NYC. I will admit it was upsetting that Neve Campbell wasn't gonna return in this film.

*

Man, these films are very full of themselves. In the last 5 months, I must've forgot how overly indulgent they get with the forth wall breaks and self-awareness.

This 100% should've released in October!

The highlights, for me, was the inclusion of Billie Eilish's "When The Party's Over" and the train sequence with a boat load of film references like Us, Halloween, Elm Street among MANY others.

The performances were okay for the most part. Jenna was the obvious standout, I'm glad she survived the entire film!

Honestly it's still so friggin' weird seeing Jasmin Savoy Brown, after playing Spider-Man: Miles Morales numerous times. I just can't differentiate from Phin/The Tinkerer.

The absence of Neve Campbell is felt massively imo.

The action was decent, albeit I still don't buy people struggling to overpower slender Ghostface compared to the bulky powerhouses like Michael Myers and Jason.

The museum/theater location was pretty cool seeing all knives, costumes etc. from the past 5 films.

I guess there'll be another film, with Sam Carpenter now inpossession of GF mask, potentially being the next killer.

#3. SHAZAM: Fury of The Gods

This was my final cinema trip of March 2023 and to tell the truth, I was not looking forward to this one bit (maybe a little, just for Rachel Zegler & Helen Mirren) Mainly because:

1.) Zachary Levi is annoying as all Hell!
2.) Nothing really matters, whatever starts in this film isn't gonna come into fruition due to James Gunn's DC Reboot.

I found the original film in 2019 to be decent. But, on a second watch, it was painfully dull.

*

This was no different to the original albeit a little more family orientated.

Thank fucking God for Rachel's and Helen's involvement, otherwise I would've been insanely bored this film's 2 hour runtime! They were both really great and kept me invested. Legitmately was gonna start hating Lucy Liu's character, think she quickly killed of Helen's Hespera.

The creature designs were very unique and felt like a step up from the 2019 film.

The action, for the most part, was okay. Incredibly spotty CGI, sometimes it's good, sometimes it's horrendous.

Could not believe the film literally froze to advertise friggin' Skittles. Slow-mo shot of the chocolate in the air then Darla says their tagline "Taste the rainbow" twice!

Definetley deserves the 40% on RT!

WB definetley didn't want to spoil the Gal Gadot Wonder Woman cameo prior to release, with a LOUD rendition theme blasting when she appeared. Certainly seemed the kind of moment that "would've" got crowds markin' out in cinemas. The two credits scenes were terrible, almost Morbius-level bad!

#2. 65

Much like last month's 'Cocaine Bear', this film's marketing is simple and to the point. The "Menacing Obstacle" that is Adam Driver protect a child while fending off dinosaurs, great concept imo.

*

If I had a penny for everytime just this year a Star Wars actor was navigating a dangerous world with a girl while also dealing with the loss of his daughter, I'd have 2 pence, which isn't alot but incredibly weird it's happened twice in 3 months.

It's about time there was a good theatrical dinosaur film during the 2020s, after last year's Jurassic disappointment.

Adam "Behemoth" Driver remains an absolute acting powerhouse in every film he does. The way he can go from such subdued attitude to immense frustration is incredible. Ariana Greenblatt was also good.

The lack of subtitles during Koa's foreign dialogue was a nice choice, putting in the shoes of Drivers character. I loved the scene where he was demonstrating to Koa where they had to go was really great.

The technology in this was actually quite satisfying. I loved seeing the holographic proximity scanner and small impulse grenades everytime they appeared on-screen.

The dinosaurs were definetley menacing at times, but it did get tiring everytime the film was setting up a jumpscare!

On paper, this certainly seemed like a VoD/streaming service type film, but I was quite surprised and thoroughly entertained!

#1. CREED III

My first cinema trip of March 2023.

This has been one of my most anticipated films for quite some time now. One, because of Tessa Thompson (What can I say, I'm a mark for her) and two, I really enjoy the 'CREED' franchise. The (then) CREED duology was pretty solid in my opinion, the first film was a nice introduction to Apollo's son, Adonis. The sequel rekindled the firey rivalry between Rocky Baloa and Ivan Drago in a great way.

From the trailers, Creed III seems to be telling it's own original story, with Adonis having to face both in and out of the ring with his estranged best friend Damien portrayed by incomparable Jonathan Majors (who got in absolutely inPECcable shape for the film!).

BRILLIANT. BRILLIANT. BRILLIANT!

This is a film for the big screen in every possible way. Gut punching emotional scenes and HARD-hitting fights! It puts all boxing films to shame, from a cinematic level.

Exceptional directoral debut. Michael B. Jordan was NOT lying when he said the boxing sequences in this film hit different, WOW! My jaw dropped to the floor during the final fight between Adonis and Damien. If you release a boxing film in cinemas, make it BIG, make it BOLD, go ALL OUT with the visuals! I know it was anime inspired as MBJ stated in many interviews, but I think he might've also took inspiration from the video game 'Fight Night: Champion' as a few repeated shots reminded me alot of the story mode camera angle option. I hope I'm correct!

The emotion of Creed III definetley hit a low blow during one key scene, between Adonis and his mother. THAT scene was so heartbreaking, hearing her transitioning from talking to her son...to "Apollo" while Adonis was breaking down beside her really hurt!

I loved the beautiful chemistry between Adonis, Tessa's character and the daughter. Really inspired choice to cast a deaf child. Every scene that featured them doing ASL together felt wholesome, the familial love was just radiating off the screen.

The performances from all the cast pulled no punches, especially with Tessa, Michael and Majors.

I'm glad Jon finally (after a couple of weeks) got to star in a MILES BETTER trilogy concluding film than the sort of forgettable and disappointing 'Quantumania'. His MCU appearances have (sorta) ruined whatever film/TV show I see him in next. During this, I at times was like "Damn, this Kang variant is very intimidating!"

While it's reported there's a fourth film potentially in the works, I wouldn't mind if the story ended there.
